€5 million boost expected for Cork

CONFERENCES AND MEETINGS TO DELIVER OVER €5 MILLION ECONOMIC BOOST FOR CORK REGION
 
Cork Convention Bureau confirms events secured to date for remainder of 2016 will deliver substantial economic boost to Cork and Ireland.

Cork Convention Bureau announced that over €5 million boost is expected for Cork and Irish economy in the second half of 2016. This will be as a direct result of the conferences and meetings secured to date through the work of Cork Convention Bureau, its Ambassadors, members and regional and national stakeholders. Cork will host in excess of 3,500 delegates within Cork city and county from July to December 2016. According to Failte Ireland, Business Tourism is one of the highest yield sectors in tourism, with business tourists and international conference delegates valued at €1,500 up to three times more that of a leisure tourist. 

Confirmed conferences and meetings range from 25 – 800 delegates and will cover a range of sectors including corporate meetings, academic and Association conferences.

Some of the confirmed events include the International Association of Profit & Non-Profit Marketing Conferences in July; International Chromotography Symposium in August; EU commission Agricultural & Rural Development Conference Cork II, ECI (Advanced Membrane Technology) Conference in September; Barbershop Singers Association Convention in October, PD Forra and EU Pat Conferences in October, the 2016 Start-Up Nations Summit in November,  the Elite Travel Group Annual Conference and the REACH Conference also in November.

Seamus Heaney, Chairman, Cork Convention Bureau added, “We have a dedicated team within the Cork Convention Bureau that work tirelessly with our members, conference ambassadors, stakeholders and in the business tourism market place to attract key international events to our region.  We continue to have great success in attracting conferences like these which are of enormous value to our region economically, but provide extensive benefits to Ireland’s academics, industry and association members in the longer term.”

The Elite Travel Group is a UK consortium comprising of over 70 independent Travel Agents. Their annual travel industry conferences not only attract valuable and quality travel agents to the region but also tour operator and industry suppliers. Over 120 international delegates are expected to attend this year’s conference at the Rochestown Park Hotel from November 4th-6th.

The Irish Association of Barbershop Singers (IABS) is bringing its’ annual international convention to Cork from 7-9th October 2016 and plans to return again in 2017 as a direct result of its’ positive experience with Cork Convention Bureau and Cork partners.  This event will attract over 600 delegates from Canada, USA, Holland, Spain, UK and Irish members. It offers an extensive programme for delegates and evening concerts are also open to the general public on the 7th & 8th providing international entertainment from award winning international Barbershop groups.

Since 2010 Cork Convention Bureau has supported over 100 Ambassadors and encouraged them to bid for over €30 million in conference business, proving very successful for the Cork region.  Conferences and events delivered €10.2 million to the Cork economy in 2015 with expectations for business tourism to deliver over €11 million to the Cork region for 2016 alone.
