National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland - WYAC 2017

10 August, 2017

180 Youth anglers, their managers, coaches and families have arrived in County Cork for the World Championships taking place this week on Inniscarra Lake. 36 teams in the categories Under 15, Under 20 and Under 25 with some competitors as young as nine will represent 14 Nations worldwide. The village of Coachford which successfully hosted the Feeder World Championships of 2014 is once again the HQ for the event and will host a Parade of Flags through the streets ahead of the official Opening Ceremony this Thursday.

The National Coarse Fishing Federation of Ireland have been working closely with the local community group Inniscarra Lake Tourism Development Ltd to bring the event to this area of West Cork and invite everyone to join them in this colourful affair, with lots to entertain the families including face painting and balloon making.  Junior members of the Aghbullogue Camogie Club and Coachford Foroige will lead the youths accompanied by the Ballingeary Pipe Band on Thursday 10th August at 6pm. Here the Mayor of Cork County Cllr Declan Hurley will then ceremoniously receive the flags from the teams and the championships will be declared open by the President of FIPSed Fédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive en Eau Douce at Coachford GAA Complex.

The competition takes place on Saturday 12th & Sunday 13th but the teams are all in place now with practise commencing from today.  The championships are a major boost for this rural area with delegates and their families accommodated in the area surrounding Coachford along with many nations utilising the UCC Campus Accommodation in Cork City. The event itself will be staged on Inniscarra Reservoir and include the Coachford Greenway, a 2.8km linear park in the form of a walkway, available for everyone to enjoy; walking, jogging, rowing, family days out, picnics and fishing. Development of this multi - purpose amenity continues and we are pleased to announce that a further €187,000 recently provided via the REDZ scheme allowed for enhancements to the Greenway to include parking bays and waymakers for the walkers and joggers ahead of this week’s championships.  It is intended that the amenity will achieve National Trails Status with Sport Ireland soon.

The National Coarse Fishing Federation are the hosts, and thank their sponsors Cork County Council, Inland Fisheries Ireland, ESB, Cork Convention Bureau and Failte Ireland for their commitment to the championships.
